Quadratic formula
- the solutions (roots) of the equation: the x-values where equals 0
- the coefficient of ; it must not be 0, or the equation is not quadratic
- the coefficient of (use 0 if there is no term)
- the constant term (use 0 if there is none)
- "plus or minus": take + for one root and − for the other
Discriminant
- the discriminant (also written Δ)
- coefficient of (not 0)
- coefficient of
- constant term
Vertex of a parabola
Vertex form
k from h
- the x-coordinate of the vertex; the line is the axis of symmetry
- the y-coordinate of the vertex: the minimum or maximum value of y
- coefficient of (not 0); its sign says whether the vertex is a minimum or a maximum
- coefficient of
- constant term
Difference of two squares
- the value of
- the first number (or expression)
- the second number (or expression)
Binomial theorem
General term (the calculator)
- the power the bracket is raised to (a whole number 0, 1, 2, …)
- which term: the calculator gives the coefficient of in
- the binomial coefficient "n choose k"
- in the calculator, the coefficient of x inside the bracket
- in the calculator, the constant inside the bracket
- the coefficient of :
Definition of a logarithm
Natural log
Common log
- the logarithm: the exponent
- the base (positive, and not 1)
- the number (must be positive)
Logarithm product rule
- the log of the product,
- the base (positive, not 1)
- the first factor (positive)
- the second factor (positive)
Logarithm quotient rule
- the log of the quotient,
- the base (positive, not 1)
- the numerator (positive)
- the denominator (positive)
Logarithm power rule
- the log of the power,
- the base (positive, not 1)
- the number being raised to a power (positive)
- the power (any real number)
Change of base formula
- the logarithm you want,
- the base you want (positive, not 1)
- the number (positive)
- natural log (base e)
- common log (base 10)
Laws of exponents
Quotient
Power of a power
Zero and negative
Fractional
- the product
- the base (positive in the calculator, so any real exponent works)
- the first exponent
- the second exponent
Exponential growth and decay
Doubling time
Growth factor form
- the amount at time t
- the starting amount (at t = 0)
- the continuous growth rate per unit time; positive for growth, negative for decay
- the time elapsed, in the same units as k
- Euler's number, about 2.71828
Half-life formula
Decay constant
- the amount remaining
- the starting amount
- the time elapsed
- the half-life: the time for half of it to decay (same units as t)
Percentage change
Reverse percentage
- the percentage change; positive is an increase, negative a decrease
- the original (old) value
- the new value
