Circumference of a circle
The distance around a circle: two pi times the radius, or pi times the diameter.
Calculator
The live calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example below shows the same steps it would.
See it move
- Area = πr² = 38.485
- Circumference = 2πr = 21.991
- Diameter = 2r = 7
What the symbols mean
- the circumference: the perimeter of the circle
- the radius
- pi, about 3.14159
When to use it
Use it for the distance round anything circular: how far a wheel rolls in one turn, the length of a running track's bend, the amount of fencing round a round pond. Working backwards, measure round a tree trunk with a tape and divide by to get its radius.
Worked example
A bicycle wheel has a radius of 35 cm. How far does it roll in one full turn? (r = 35)
Start from the formula.
Substitute = and work it out.
Answer C ≈ 219.91 cm, a little over two metres
Why it works
This is the definition of π: every circle's circumference divided by its diameter gives the same number, and we call it π. Since the diameter is , the circumference is .
Common mistakes
- Mixing up (circumference) and (area). Check units: a length cannot come out in cm².
- Using the diameter in , which doubles the answer.
- Forgetting that a rolling wheel's distance per turn is its circumference, not its diameter.
