Surface area of a sphere

Exactly four times the area of a circle with the same radius.

S=4πr2
Hemisphere (curved part)S=2πr2

Calculator

The live calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example below shows the same steps it would.

See it move

r = 6
  • Volume = ⁴⁄₃πr³ = 904.78
  • Surface area = 4πr² = 452.39 (four times the area of a great circle)

What the symbols mean

S
the surface area
r
the radius

When to use it

Use it for the leather on a football, the paint on a dome, the area of a planet's surface, or the heat a spherical tank loses. A hemisphere with its flat base has 2πr2+πr2=3πr2.

Worked example

A ball has a radius of 6 cm. What is its surface area? (r = 6)

  1. Start from the formula.

    S=4⁢π⁢r2
  2. Substitute r = 6 and work it out.

    S=4⁢π·62
    =4⁢π·36
    ≈452.389

Answer S ≈ 452.39 cm²

Why it works

Archimedes again: the sphere's surface equals the curved surface of the cylinder that wraps it, 2πr×2r=4πr2. The derivative of the volume 43πr3 with respect to r is also 4πr2: adding a thin skin adds surface area times thickness.

Common mistakes

  • Using πr2, which is only the area of a flat circle through the centre.
  • Cubing r: surface area is in square units, so r is squared.
