Surface area of a sphere
Exactly four times the area of a circle with the same radius.
Hemisphere (curved part)
Calculator
The live calculator needs JavaScript. The worked example below shows the same steps it would.
See it move
- Volume = ⁴⁄₃πr³ = 904.78
- Surface area = 4πr² = 452.39 (four times the area of a great circle)
What the symbols mean
- the surface area
- the radius
When to use it
Use it for the leather on a football, the paint on a dome, the area of a planet's surface, or the heat a spherical tank loses. A hemisphere with its flat base has .
Worked example
A ball has a radius of 6 cm. What is its surface area? (r = 6)
Start from the formula.
Substitute = and work it out.
Answer S ≈ 452.39 cm²
Why it works
Archimedes again: the sphere's surface equals the curved surface of the cylinder that wraps it, . The derivative of the volume with respect to r is also : adding a thin skin adds surface area times thickness.
Common mistakes
- Using , which is only the area of a flat circle through the centre.
- Cubing r: surface area is in square units, so r is squared.
